The following exchange took place during my ACLS class. The GIFs = my mental commentary.
Dr. Gunner: Exactly how many breaths do we need to be giving? Is it 2 every 30 compressions, or is it 8-10 per minute? Does it change if the patient has an advanced airway in?
Nurse A.C. Elles: It’s always 2 breaths per 30 compressions. Unless the patient has an advanced airway in place, and then it’s one breath every 5-6 seconds.
Dr. Gunner: So if they have a nasal airway, it’s every 5-6 seconds? SO THEN IT’S NOT ALWAYS 2 BREATHS.
Me:
Nurse: No, a nasal airway is not an advanced airway. It’s still 30:2.
Dr. Gunner: BUT YOU SAID advanced airways are every 5-6 seconds.
Me:
Nurse: Right. If they are intubated, breathe regularly for them.
Dr. Gunner: BUT YOU SAID ALWAYS 2 BREATHS. You said it wrong. I guess it’s not ALWAYS 2 breaths, is it?
Me:
Nurse: Ahem, I guess I was not clear.
